Verso la fine di novembre 2008, Matt Held, pittore residente a New York, decide di dipingere la foto del profilo Facebook della moglie. Passa poi a ritrarre le foto del profilo di alcuni amici, inizialmente come esercizio sulle tonalità della pelle.
At this point he understands than on the mediatic success of Facebook this could be a really good start point to promote his career so he starts to paint the portraits (always from the Facebook profile photos) of the most interesting people who would ask him the friendship/join his group on Facebook and sets a limit of 200 paintings. A questo punto capisce che, sull’onda mediatica del successo di Facebook, questo potrebbe essere un bel trampolino di lancio e decide di dipingere i ritratti (sempre dalle foto del profilo) di quelli che maggiormente lo ispiravano tra chi gli chiedeva l’amicizia o entrava nel suo gruppo e si prefigge di arrivare a ben 200 opere.
