It’s so crazy to see how we have come from 8/16/32 bit graphics. Now we have stunning scenery video games like Uncharted, Gears of War, Gran Turismo, Battlefield, and the list goes on. Each and every year, game development companies push the limits and work hard to provide a unique gaming experience. Most of the titles below consist of animated gifs and static images. It’s quite interesting to observe and admire the creativity or video game designers who until now had limited technological resources.

“Candykiller is a brand created by Scottish artist Brian Taylor. Brian started out as a graphic designer and illustrator in the design and advertising industry, working in various studios around Scotland. He now works from his home studio in Dundee.

Most of his work is influenced by imagery from his childhood. A collection of illustrations, design ideas, and assorted visual ramblings, inspired by cheap novelties, vintage cartoons, pop art, trading cards and underground comix, to name a few of the wonders that sparked his imagination as a child. Candykiller projects range from books, toys, original art and limited edition prints.”

Zim and Zou – Back to Basics

Back to Basics is a project by Zim & Zou, a french designers duo based in Nancy, France. For their graphic design projects they use a lot of paper and materials to create compositions which are both abstract and real, something plain as a typography poster gets a real depth with the use of cutouts and 3D lettering, nicely photographed.

In this project they remade with colored paper famous objects from a recent past, respecting proportions and sizes of each element. One year of work and the project is still a work in progress.

Mark Summers’ modern scratchboards

Mark Summers’ a supertalented illustrator from Canada. He’s very famous for his illustrations done with scratchboard technique, that gives them an old school look. Inside the post the process.

“As a student at the Ontario College of Art in 1976, Mark Summers was introduced to scratchboard by the revered political cartoonist Duncan Macpherson. Soon after graduation, he began circulating his portfolio of portraits. His big break came with a portrait of Douglas McArthur from the New York Times Book Review, and he hasn’t stopped working since. Mark’s engravings in scratchboard have garnered numerous awards, exhibits, and a continually expanding client list that still includes regular features in the Book Review.”

The process

Step 1: A quick sketch
To block out the final composition.

Step 2: The preliminary sketch
I don’t always go to this extreme for a rough sketch- only if the piece is fairly complex or if the client needs to see some indication of where the exact light and darks will fall. I’m not sure how I wound up doing sketches in such a Byzantine fashion, but it is a quick way to determine the overall tone.
This is a simple line drawing, done with a felt tip pen. On tracing paper- I then spray mount it onto a light toned paper. The highlights are acrylic paint. Even after this step I will still tend to “fiddle.” If I feel a hand is too small, or a figure too large I photocopy it to the proper size and just paste it in.

Step 3: The finished black and white.
Each drawing begins as a black square. After this, using a knife, I scratch white lines into the surface. I try to discourage clients from asking to see “the work in progress,” as at any time there will be an entirely finished head here, a hand there, all floating in a sea of black.
I tend to work size-as (this drawing is 12” high- each face being approximately 2” high.) In a drawing such as this, I find it takes a full day to finish each figure. I then have the finished work scanned and printed onto photographic paper.

Step 4: Finished color.
A fast process, as the black and white drawing already defines the modeling. Simple flat tones of color are all that are really needed. I paint details with watercolor and then everything else with oil glazes. Sometimes I go in and smooth things out with airbrush. The final step is to paint in highlights with acrylic.

The coloring of this piece took about three hours.

Maurizio Anzeri’s embroidered vintage photographs

Maurizio Anzeri is a London based Italian artist, who works with discarded portraits which he reinvents through creative needlework and embroidery. He uses synthetic hair as his thread of choice, which he stitches and sews on vintage photographs to create complex geometrical patterns and structures. Although rich in colors and extremely animated, his works are at the same time uncanny: they deprive the characters of their original individuality by overlaying mysterious veils and masks on the portraits. Nevertheless, Anzeri emphasizes certain facial features (like the eyes or the mouth – salient cues of social relevance) which manage to effectively radiate new expressions. As a body of work, Anzeri’s series has to be seen as a resourceful reinterpretation of identities and a powerful means of suggesting alternative stories.

Anzeri is mostly known for his life-size hair sculptures. He graduated with an MA in Fine Art (Sculpture) from The Slade School of Fine Art in 2005. He was selected as one of the top 100 young emerging artists in the January 2008 edition of Flash Art, and was one of 30 artists shortlisted for the 2008 Sovereign European Art Prize. Niklas Coskan aka DeeDeeKid

Born in Germany in 1989, Niklas Coskan is a young illustrator and graphic designer (and student). I immediatly appreciated his retro style and the way he uses colors and halftones. You can find his t-shirts around the web on the most famous sites, like LaFraise.com and a skate deck on Infectious.
