Dave Hill famous commercial photographer, is born in San Diego and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. The effects (mix of HDR and photo illustration) that he applies to his photographs are truly amazing.

Dave doesn’t use a simple Photoshop plugin, he pays particular attention to the lights. Here you can read an interesting article about it (part.1 – part.2). Open a new A4 document in  Adobe illustrator. we have to create the “grid” of the cross, this is maybe the most complex part of the tutorial. Select the Line Segment tool and draw a line, long as our document width. Draw another line at about 25 cm from the first one. Both the lines (1,2) must have 1 point stroke.

Now go to Object/Blend/Blend Options and on the panel select “Specified steps” (1) as Spacing and give 30 as value. Select the lines made before and go to Blend/Make.

Now select the horizontal lines object you just made, duplicate it and rotate it 90 degrees to maka e a grid. Select all and go to Object/Expand so that you can work on single lines.
Pull both horizontal and vertical lines so that you obtain a cross similar to this one (1).

Select the cross and try to give it a perspective look, in order to do this go to Object/Envelope Distort/Make with warp. In Warp Options put 0 (zero) to the first and second value and about 60 to the third. We’r gonna obtain this result. Stretch it a bit by the lower end.

Now we’re gonna make the thickness of the cross with the same process, paying attention to respecting the perspective view. With some try you should get something like this (1)

Now got to Photoshop. Create a blank A4 document in Photoshop. Make a black layer with the Paint Bucket. Import the cross from Illustrator as Advanced Object. select the cross layer and rasterize it (right click “Rasterize Layer”). Add a layer style “Gradient Overlay” and set these values above.

Now duplicate this layer and go to Filters/Blur/Box Blur, try to give a value between 8 and 20 looking at the result you see down here. Don’t go to far with this step or you’ro gonna get a confused image.

Create a new group called “cross” and put in it all the layers you did so far, expect the black background. Now we’re gonna work with lights. Add a new layer over the “cross” group and name it “light”, select the Brush tool. It must be very large, about 2000 px and soft, select whit as foreground color. Se the Light layer in Overlay as blend mode. One or two clicks on the top of the cross should be ok.

Select the cross (cmd o ctrl+click on the layer) and with a lot smller brush (try 200 px) on  a new layer trace the border of the cross. Pay attention to set this layer in Overlay, as the other one.

With this technique, adding layers to give lights to other parts, the cross will be more and more bright. Don’t got o far with this.

Add a new group called “cross lights” and put in it the layer with the lights work. We’re almost at the end. Take a grunge texture (you can easily find it online). The color is not important, just be sure the size is big enough. Import the texture in our work and place it just over the black background.

Desaturate it and out the blend mode in “Vivid Light”

Go to Image/Adjustment/Levels (cmd+L) and move the first cursor to the right to make the image darker

Add the text and the final touches you think it needs. I used a Gill Sans as font as a quote to “2001: a space Odyssey”, Kubrick’s masterpiece.

Ok, the work is done. I personally never finish to give final touches on every single detail to get a perfect image. You can use different ways to get the result, experimentation is the key word of the creative process.

Nik Ainley is Shinybinary famous English designer and illustrator. Very famous are some of his tutorial, sure you will already see them on PSDTUTS, Computer Arts Arts, and DigitalArtsOnline.
The first version of his site portfolio, Shinybinary, launched in 2004, has been visited almost a quarter of a million unique visitors. Version 2 has been put online in 2006 and since then has attracted over 1.75 million visitors.
As an illustrator Nik has received many publications in journals and books. E ‘was listed as one of the “Top 10 creative talents of 2006″ by Computer Arts magazine, and later as “Computer Artits artist of the moment.”

Heiko starts with the art of graffiti, almost 10 years ago. In early 2004 discovered the digital medium and began to publish his works on the web.
In 2008 he launched an online project called “RiskShiftLabs, a portfolio in collaboration with Kai Isselhorst.

Qui la prima sfida

Mi è piaciuto così tanto il film che ho deciso di dedicargli un tutorial per la creazione di uno dei personaggi principali. In questo tutorial mi focalizzerò principalmente sull’uso del Mesh Tool, sconosciuto ai neofiti e ignorato spesso anche dagli utilizzatori più esperti.

In un nuovo documento disegnamo un ovale bianco.

Deformiamolo usando la freccina bianca Direct Selection tool e agendo sul vertice in alto. Lo abbassiamo (1) e tiriamo le maniglie verso l’esterno (2) (3) per ottenere una cosa simile alla figura qui sopra

Diamo una forma più affusolata alla parte bassa selezionando sempre col direct selection tool i punti ai lati della circonferenza e trascinando la maniglia bassa di ciascun punto un po’ verso l’interno, come in figura.

Creiamo la forma base della testa con lo stesso procedimento.

Usiamo un grigio medio come colore del contorno, diamo un giusto spessore e scegliamo che il bordo sia esterno alla figura.

Selezioniamo il corpo, CTRL+C e CTRL+F per incollare sul posto. Alla nuova forma appena incollata togliamo il contorno e lasciamo solo il riempimento bianco. Con i tasti direzionali della tastiera spostiamo leggermente a destra in modo che nasconda parzialmente il bordo grigio della figura sottostante. Facciamo lo stesso per la testa.

Selezioniamo il corpo senza il bordo (è quello più alto che abbiamo appena spostato) e con lo strumento Mesh Tool (1) creiamo una griglia esattamente come in figura cliccando nei punti indicati dalle frecce.

con il Direct selection tool (1) selezioniamo i punti 2-3-4 tenendo premuto SHIFT e diamo un grigio al 30%.

Sempre selezionado con la freccia bianca selezionate il punto 1 e assegnate un nero al 15%, al punto 2 nero al 10% così come al punto 3. Al punto 4 nero 20%, 5 nero 10% e 6 nero 15%.

Con il Pen Tool (1) create la forma che vedete al punto (2) indicata dalla freccia. Diamo come riempimento un gradiente circolare con 2 grigi non troppo scuri e il bianco disposti come vedete al punto (6). Con il Gradient Tool aggiustiamo la posizione per ottenere il risultato che vediamo in figura.

Aggiungiamo un riflesso creando una semplice linea bianca che segue la forma precedentemente creata, come vedete nell’immagine. Lo spessore nel mio caso è 2 punti, ma dipende dalle dimensioni a cui state lavorando. Regolatevi cercando di seguire le proporzioni che vedete nelle immagini.

Facciamo qualcosa di simile per la testa, sempre usando il Mesh Tool.

I punti centrali 4-5-6 sono più scuri, quelli esterni sulla sinistra più chiari. Ai punti del bordo (1-2-3 ecc) dal lato sinistro è stato dato un grigio chiaro mentre la linea indicata al punto 7 è bianca. Per dare una corretta rotondita alle ombre potete spostare i punti regolandovi ad occhio, tenete comunque presente che gran parte della zona centrale della testa sarà poi coperta dalla mascherina nera.

A questo punto dovreste avere qualcosa del genere.

Analogamente a quanto fatto all’inizio create la mascherina nera con lo strumento ellisse e lavorando col Direct Selection tool sui suoi punti.

Diamo come riempimento un gradiente nero e grigio molto scuro sulla destra.

Con il pen tool disegnamo la forma che vedete in figura, diamo un gradiente con 2 grigi e portiamo dietro a tutto.

Duplichiamola con CTRL+C e CTRL+B (in questo modo verrà incollata sul posto ma dietro all’originale), ruotiamola leggermente e riempiamola col bianco e diamo una traccia grigia.

Mantenendo selezionata questa forma andiamo su Object ed Expand Appearance.

Otterremo il gruppo che vedete in figura nella palette Layers. Il sottolivello Path (2) possiamo eliminarlo cliccando sul cestino (3)

A quello che resta diamo un gradiente bianco grigio radiale.

Questa parte è complessa ma fate attenzione perchè verrà riutilizzata in seguito (questo step è utilizzato anche nel tutorial del cuore glossy). Creiamo la forma in figura (1), riempimento nero (come vedete nella preview piccola al punto 2). Andiamo sulla palette Transparency e diamo opacità 10%. Clicchiamo sulla piccola freccia (3) e selezionamo Make opacity mask. Clicchiamo nella preview indicata da (4). Ora disegnamo una forma simile a quella originaria ma un po’ più grande (non importa che sia precisa al millimetro) e diamo un gradiente radiale bianco nero come riempimento. Aggiustiamo con il Grandient Tool. In questo modo daremo un aspetto più sfumato all’ombra del braccio. Clicchiamo nuovamente sulla preview a sinistra (7)(2) per tornare a lavorare sul disegno.

Con il solito procedimento iniziale disegnamo il braccio come in figura

Come prima creiamo la griglia che vedete nell’immagine con il Mesh Tool.

Ai punti indicati dalle frecce diamo un nero 20%.

Tra 1 e 2 assegnamo nero al 30%, a tutti i punti delle 2 file successive, tranne i punti 3-4-5, diamo un nero al 20%. I punti 3-4-5 restano bianchi

Disegnamo un cerchietto azzurro molto piccolo (grande come uno dei led negli occhi di Eve). Selezioniamolo e definiamo un nuovo pennello (2). Nella finestra che comparirà scegliamo New Pattern Brush diamo ok e ancora ok ed il nuovo pennello comparira nella palette Brushes. Con lo strumento penna (3) (o se preferite linea) disegnamo una breve linea (4) orizzontale. Copiamola e incolliamola con CTRL+F più volte spostandola coi tasti direzionali sopra o sotto alla precedente formando un quadratino di pallini. A questo punto selezioniamo tutto il quadratino e su Edit e clicchiamo Define Pattern e il nostro nuovo pattern comparira tra i nostri campioni nella palette Swatches. Disegnamo gli occhi con 2 ovali leggermente inclinati e diamo come riempimento il nostro pattern appena creato.

Con il procedimento della maschera di opacità spiegato prima ho aggiunto alcuni punti luce e qualche ombra extra e poi una semplice ombra a terra.
