Produced by Joe black, using more than 5500 toy soldiers. The portrait is of a Chinese soldier boy taken by photographer Robert Capa. The image was used on the front cover of LIFE magazine, January 1938 to cover the Sino Japanese War. The toy soldiers are manufactured in China, hence the title “Made in China”.

Hine Mizushima, who was born and raised in Japan, majored in Japanese traditional painting before working as a designer and Illustrator in Tokyo. She later moved to Rome, then Paris, and then NYC. Five years ago she left New York for Vancouver, Canada where she lives with her family. She is currently also a slow crafter, needlefelter, and stop-motion puppet animation video artist. Her Illustrations are mainly paper cutout and digital. Her felt sculptures have been exhibited in galleries in NYC, LA, SF and elsewhere. She sells her felt creations and prints on her Etsy handmade shop.

iModela, the cheapest 3D printer (so far)

So you’re a character designer / artist / toy designer and you want to make real toys out of your designs? Roland has just released the cheapest (so far) 3D printer, called iModela. According to what they say iModela can use different materials as a base for your toys, from plastic to wood. You can download models on the internet or use your original 3Ds and just print them. The cost is around $ 977, it’s not an ice cream’s price, but in the 3D printers world it’s the best solution for a non industrial/design studio use. Check the video

The King of Legoland is a stop-motion film that shows a flurry of morphing 1980s toys and video games. French web designer, Micaël Reynaud, has captured everything from the Rubik’s Cube to Transformers to LEGOs to much more.

Kidrobot for Swatch

Swatch has teamed up with Kidrobot, to create Kidrobot for Swatch, a collection of eight Gents, each accompanied by a complimentary Dunny. Dunny is Kidrobot’s iconic and highly collectible bunny-like vinyl toy, a customizable canvas for artists from widely varying backgrounds. Eight artists have contributed to the new collection, each with a characteristic design for a Gent and its accompanying 3-inch (7.6 cm) Dunny. The artists involved are: Gary Baseman, Jeremyville, Frank Kozik, Joe Ledbetter, MAD, Tara McPherson, SSUR, and Tilt.

“Candykiller is a brand created by Scottish artist Brian Taylor. Brian started out as a graphic designer and illustrator in the design and advertising industry, working in various studios around Scotland. He now works from his home studio in Dundee.

Most of his work is influenced by imagery from his childhood. A collection of illustrations, design ideas, and assorted visual ramblings, inspired by cheap novelties, vintage cartoons, pop art, trading cards and underground comix, to name a few of the wonders that sparked his imagination as a child. Mariel Clayton and Barbie killed Ken

Mariel Clayton is a self-taught photographer. In an action figures shop in Tokyo she had the vision of the world where all those dolls’ stories happen, and she wanted to visit it and take photos. Her main character is the most famous doll of all times: Barbie, that after throwing away (literally, very often) her fashion victim clothes, become executioner and gives vent to her bound violence on Ken. And, admit it, you’d do it too!

She says: “ (I’m) A Doll Photographer with a subversive sense of humour. I believe that life is an hysterically messed up place, and if we don’t laugh at it, we’ll never understand it. I didn’t have a hard childhood, I was never abused, I’m not an ‘evil, dark or psychologically scarred’ person. I just think what I do is damn freaking funny – and I like to share the humour with people.”
