Charlie Immer’s Carnival

Charlie Immer is a 1983-born artist based in Brooklyn, New York. He hold a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. His colorful paintings and illustrations depict a surreal universe of poppy creatures engaged in violent actions uncovering underneath the cute surface anatomical layers of a gory aesthetic.

In an interview with Sunrise Artists, Charlie explains:

“My concepts come from my fascination with anatomy and my love of candy and toys. I have so much fun creating the blood and bones of my characters. The contrast of the smooth bodies and the complex systems beneath spilling out is very appealing to me.”

So Yoon Lym’s Paintings of Hair and Braid Patterns

So Yoon Lym is a Korean New Jersey-based artist who has spent parts of her life also in Kenya, Uganda and France and who works in different mediums. In this post, we want to introduce her ongoing series of realistic acrylic on paper paintings of hair and braid patterns, titled “The Dreamtime“.

She started the series in the summer of 2008 and the paintings are based on photos she has taken of students and strangers she came across in Paterson, New Jersey where she has been working for the past 9 years.

I the description on her website, she explains: “I have a strong interest in hair as a transformative vehicle of physicality. I am also interested in the associations of hair and hairstyles as indicators of social, cultural, ethnic and gender affiliations.(…) These hair and braid pattern designs are for the most part viewed from an aerial perspective. In most cultures around the world, perspective in art is aerial. It is not the egocentric perspective of European Renaissance art. The aerial perspective that the aborigines used in their art was a way of showing that nature, the land, life, the earth, all living things, and all creative forces are greater than us, but we are tied to and interconnected to all things around us as spirits floating in a time continuum.”

The Art of Grant Coghill

Grant Coghill is a Scottish illustrator and designer who studied web/graphic design in Aberdeen is now based in Austria. He works in a variety of media and is currently experimenting with spray/airbrush/acrylic. We just love the surreal character of his work, the intricate detail, the color palettes and textures!

Daniel James Diggle’s Illustrations

Daniel James Diggle is an illustrator and designer based in London. He is a member of the Keystone Design Union and the KDU Core. He also runs the illustration collaboration site Wolfbite together with fellow illustrator Jessica Allan.

“With a love for type, structures and organic forms, I work from pencil to pen creating my pieces. Part inspired by traditional woodcuts and Victorian era engraving, I strive to develop a level of craft in my illustrations.”

For most of his illustration work he uses pointilism and stippling. In an interview on ocularharmony, he describes his creative process:

“Most of my character work is analogue to start. Pencil sketches first, then clean inked pen lines. After that the image is scanned in and colouring added via Photoshop and the like. If I ever choose to further my character illustrations then working more digitally would probably be better; using illustrator to ‘ink’ the sketches would make the final image far more flexibe than a resolution static scan.”

Illustration and Animation Work by Noper

Radu Pop aka Noper is a talented and successful Romanian illustrator with a thing for animation.

He currently lives in Bucharest and works as an Art Director with an advertising agency. In his early carreer he often found himslef juggling with various illustration styles and media, but his more mature work clearly underlines his passion to create bizarre characters and surreal worlds. His final works are ellaborated, with a dark feel about them.

He never plans or sketches a drawing, but prefers to pump every bit of his spontaneous creativity on any type of canvas he has in front: a piece of paper, a tablet, a wall or a napkin. This is how every work gets an organic, unique feeling. He goes by the motto “If I see it, maybe i’ll feel it. If I feel it, fuck I’ll draw it”.

Noper has worked for famous clients and was included in “Luerzer’s Archive: 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide 2009/10“. The print-ad he had done for MTV with Leo Burnett Lisboa has won a Bronze Lion at the 2010 Cannes International Advertising Festival. Recently he was a finalist in the 3rd Season of Layer Tennis.

Acrylic Paintings by Ted Vasin

Ted Vasin is an artist from Russia, now based in San Francisco who has been widely exhibited over the past decade. He uses sleep visions as his starting point for visual inspiration. He then takes these ideas and renders them through the use of 3-D computer programs in order to achieve multi-dimensional qualities within the work. The renderings are then re-photographed and used throughout subsequent works as visual cues, building an entirely new graphic language. The artist often uses sound installations to accompany the paintings and other 2-D works, mimicking the formal qualities of the paintings with sound (source: Daily Serving).
