Yes, these campaigns will not stop people smoking, maybe, but for an art director/copywriter building a successful campaign against smoking is always a challenge. Here a collection of the most creative and inspiring campaigns against smoking.
Yeah, we know smoking’s dangerous. We know it’s unhealthy, it smells, it’s addictive. But smokers are fast becoming a pariah caste. All of a sudden it’s OK to harass and abuse smokers; it’s ok to call us names and such. That’s not ok.
Smoking causes blindness? Since when?
I agree. The demonization of smokers is getting pretty old.
Obesity just surpassed smoking as the #1 cause of heart disease. When are we gonna start seeing ads that say “Hey fatty! You’re gross and are going to die!”
Oz & Halliday:
It is okay because smokers are using up valuable hospital beds, destroying the environment and making others sick. It is completely immoral to smoke and one day it will be illegal and the whole world will finally see how dumb their race was to do it in the first place.
People choose to smoke. People do NOT choose to be obese. I’m not obese, but I live with others who are overweight and they are doing everything they can to lose it. They ALWAYS eat healthy and exercise a lot more than me. Some people’s bodies just aren’t good at loosing weight.
Any smoker can give up, as long as they have the right mindset, unlike you two. Not all obese/overweight people can loose weight.
Uhm…yeah. Actually. A majority of the obese people in the world technically choose to be obese to begin with. They eat food that’s absolutely HORRIBLE for you, and then complain “Oh, I’m fat,”. Well, tough for you.
And smoking does as much damage to the environment as cars, buses, and all of the machinery that’s busy cutting down trees. But do we stop driving? Do we stop making more room for people to live? Nope.
I avoid children when I smoke. I’ll walk around a whole building to stay away from them. But when people walk by and make rude comments, or cough loudly (and intentionally), I get angry, because I don’t want to be harassed for a personal choice.
Anyways, I have to agree that these are very creative anti-smoking ads, though I doubt that many of them will actually prevent people from smoking.
I don’t see how these adds are demonizing smokers, other than those who smoke around their children. Their about educating the smokers. As someone who has lost a parent and a grandparent to cancers caused by smoking, we just want you to stop for your own good.
Too bad it takes as long as it does for it to kill them
As far as the Obesity/Smoking argument, it is natural to eat. since when is it natural to inhale combustion products? Eating is one of the primary body functions, we need to eat, do we need to smoke? (Nope) The list goes on. Smoking is as natural and as acceptable as shooting up heroin; it violates our body in a way that is irreversible.
I like how the ads have a children aspect to it. Nothing pisses me off more than to smell a child who smells like cigs, because their parents needed a fix. Or to see a mother with a lit cigarette in her mouth driving with a backseat filled with kids. For the offended smokers; Have fun with your dirty, expensive and deadly addiction.
Since the only creatures I can think of that breathe smoke are dragons and demons, and smokers don’t have wings. This would put them into a class of Demon.
Therefore the demonization of smokers will continue.
Creative ads. Perhaps the smoking causes blindness makes you think. More than just a normal “stop smoking” ad.
If my mother smoked, I would be sure to tell her of her idiocy. Every chance I had I would remind her of her foolishness.
I’ll quit smoking when people quit nagging and whining about smoking. I swear anti-smokers are some of the biggest crybabies Ive ever seen.
Shut the hell up and go find something to do with your life. If you don’t like my smoking, then get the hell away from me. Who says I want you near me if you’re just going to bitch?
Harassing me about smoking may be hazardous to YOUR health.
Most of these ads are quite creative, but some seem to be more sensational and distracting than they are persuasive or effective. Overall, very interesting to look at.
To Phil;
Arguments involving what’s “natural” really don’t make sense when trying to compare smoking with obesity. Any comparison to what’s natural gets thrown out the door when one compares it to any civilization’s daily functions, especially one that has the internet. You could argue that most things that we as people do is not “natural” since it wasn’t directly created by nature. On the other hand, you could make the argument that EVERYTHING we do is natural, since humans are a product of nature, and we do what is natural to survive in our surroundings. It’s completely natural to do things that bring us pleasure, relaxation, or otherwise change our perception, and we’ve been doing these sorts of things since before recorded time. For some of us, that means enjoying a smoke to either help deal with the stresses of modern life or simply to enjoy the rich aroma of quality tobacco. For others, it’s enjoying a hearty meal. Do we really need either? No, but is natural to desire these sorts of things.
To Halliday;
Smokers are not demons, and your logic in calling them demons is childish. By your logic;
Bleach is mostly made up of water. People are mostly made up of water. Therefore, we are bleach.
There are many things that people do that seem idiotic to others, but that doesn’t mean you know more than they do. Some would say religion and all the people that follow it are idiotic. I guarantee more people have died as a result of religious fanatics in our history than smoking, yet no government institution would dare sponsor an ad campaign denouncing religion.
To everyone;
stop the ad homonym attacks. Let’s be adults and just accept that some people are going to do things that you don’t agree with, and that is perfectly okay.
the “eating food is natural” argument gets thrown out the window when you examine the contents of the food we eat today. The chemicals and preservatives found in most processed and readily available food is about as natural as the chemicals found in cigarettes. Constant eating of McDonald’s (not saying all obese people do this, because that’s obviously not true.) has the same (or at least similar) long term health risks as smoking.
I’ll never understand the mentality of someone who does something on purpose to hurt themselves. You’d think the survival instinct would kick in. Since smokers know they are hurting not only themselves, but others as well, this would indicate their survival instinct is awry, thereby meaning a mental disorder. Either that or insanity. There are two words that describe choices people make like this. Stupid, and dumb. Dumb means you don’t know better. Stupid means you know better, but do the opposite. Smoking is stupid, and there is no denial that can defend it.
Sorry “Hammer ha detto” it is most definately not ok to watch people hurt themselves and other people. Only deranged people think so.
Oh and as for the obesity argument, there is a simple truth. Matter doesn’t come from nothing. If someone is fat, it took a conscious decision to put it there. It doesn’t magically appear. Fact. Go back a couple hundred years, and the only fat people were the wealthy, lazy, gluttonous people. No defense against this statement either.
Regardless of how annoying non-smokers and anti-smokers may be, the point remains: You are destroying your health. There’s no way around it. Everybody knows this. Why say that you’ll “quit when people quit nagging and whining”? If you’re so adamant about smoking, then you’re not going to quit when people shut up, so don’t even pretend. Let the anti-smoking campaigns continue so we can at least prevent other people from your fate.
the friggin car you drive puts out more deadly gas out then cigarettes every will, so until the day yo stop driving that gas guzzler stop being such a hypocrite and get your self righteous hands out of smokers pockets.
Okay, I’m all for people making their own choices. If you smoke, you have to accept that it’s an unhealthy habit that can also harm people around you- that’s just part of the deal. There are tons of other terrible habits that exist, all with their own consequences. Yes, some of the ads are an exaggeration, but that’s the point of an ad- to make someone understand a message.
The one thing that bothers me here is that people are defending smoking- especially by saying that non-smokers are just holier-than-thou prudes. You have to know that it’s something that you’d be better off not doing, it’s useless to deny it.
just shut up already a choice is a choice if you dont want your kids to smoke then talk to them about it. You have a say in their lives, but you dont have a say in others lives so shut up if you dont like the smell of smoke most places are nonsmoking now so you have the choice to not go to a place where people can smoke everyone knows what and drugs do to your health so stop patting your self on the back and leave people alone ok…….DOUCHE
To go to the whole smoking vs. obesity argument…I am a big girl, I try to loose weight, I am also healthy and can out run at least half of the smokers I know. On the other hand I am extremely allergic to cigarette smoke and am currently getting over my second bout of brochitis this year because people on my campus choose to smoke in front of builings and all around others.
Obesity does not make others sick and turn their lungs black whereas smoking does.
If you wish to smoke do whatever you want but stay away from those who don’t want to. You may choose to smoke but on the same hand I choose not to, stop making me.
I also love that every non-smoker assumes that because a few people smoke near them, every smoker is out to force their second hand smoke on people. I smoke in designated smoking areas or far enough away from the entrances to buildings so as not to bother anyone who doesn’t want to be bothered. I don’t have kids. So now… Exactly how is it your business to tell me not to smoke at this point? You aren’t informing me, since I already know the risks. It’s called nagging at this point, and you aren’t my spouse, so guess what? You can expect me to become a defensive asshole, since you are beyond the realm of what is expected and proper social behavior. If I told you five hundred times a day to make sure you wash your dishes to prevent bacteria growth in your kitchen and stop the spread of diseases such as salmonella, eventually you would get sick of it and tell me to shut the hell up, since your housekeeping is none of my business. Well, kindly shut the hell up, since my personal choices that do not impact others are just that: MY PERSONAL CHOICES.
Stop smoking ads always make me light up a cigarette.
Yeah, I know it’s bad for me but get this….everyone, EVERYONE dies. I could eat healthy, exercise, not smoke, drink or do drugs, get plenty of sleep and perhaps live a little bit longer but I want to enjoy the “dirty” and “bad” parts of life. Of MY life. Get off my back about it or I’ll flick my still lit cigarette butt into your open window while we’re sitting at a stop light.
its really hard to tell people who’s been enjoying and spending most of their years smoking not to smoke, because the smoke has cloud their mind.
i would say we do our best to help those who wants the help, and let those who despise our help go their way. there’s people who tried all ways to live longer even just a day, and there’s those who do not care if they die faster. so let them be. the world is healthier without them anyway.
obviously though, these ads are working since the smokers are offended and feel the need to defend themselves. by the way, why are smokers offended by these ads if they truly already know that these are the facts. too scared to be reminded i guess? i believe the ads are there so people who were not educated enough about these facts can think twice.
a good idea though, is for governments to create little smoking rooms in public, so these smokers who choose to destroy their bodies can destroy and kill each other.
ps: why compare humans to cars?
and how can u just ‘talk’ ur kid out of smoking if they see u smoke. esp if ur their rolemodel. we dont smoke and we cant even talk you out of it. clear ur head before u speak rubbish.
I, personally am not offended by these ads. I’m offended by other people telling me what I should and should not do with my body. If I want to suck poisonous carcinogens into my lungs, then let me do it. What’s it matter to you?
Who wants to be lying in a hospital bed dying of nothing anyway?
@The Steve : if you were referring to my post, i mentioned clearly that those who dont want help and wishes to continue smoking go ahead.suck it all u want it aint matter to me. i said we shall help those who need/want the help. oh and by the way, NO ONE dies of nothing. they always die of SOMEthing- old age, cancer, accident, murder etc2.. but one has the option to choose whether they will try to prolong their health or ignore it. and the way u need to see it, people advises smokers to stop because they care and are concerned, hoping that at least out of a handful one or two people snap out of it.. and these people get no benefit from doin that. the benefits go to u, ur family, friends, bf/gf,.
Buy an electric car, eliminate the use of gas in your home and never start a fire for pleasure or otherwise, and then we’ll talk about how much my smoking is harming the environment.
Get off your high horse, humans are naturally destructive. To assume they can exclude themselves from the things that they destroy is ludicrous.
Ima go smoke.
The concept of smoking is so opposed simply because they hurt not only themselves, but others. Obesity is different. They only hurt themselves. But second hand smoke kills, the buts are litter, it harms the environment, when you get sick it fills hospital beds, and as for the element of “relaxation”? Meditate. Light some incense. Have a nap. Hell, just play solitaire!
To Ray:
Yes humans are destructive. Part of being sentient. But the righteous man can overcome the sentient instinct to destroy, and create. As a matter of fact, you may only see the destruction, but when you look at the huge amount of forest still here and the large amount of people willing to do something about it you’ll actually see that we can become creative, not destructive.
To kyonichi:
You harm our earth, you litter, you destroy, and like it or not, it’s the truth. Even if you go to the Savannah Desert you’ll still take a hospital bed from someone who took a bullet or got their head smashed open. No matter what, you hurt someone. You should be ashamed.
To all Pro – Smokers here:
Your arguments are all the same. “It’s my choice” “I smoke far away” “I accept the consequences”. You’re going to harm everyone.
lol, it’s not that we got nothing to do to harrass smokers, it’s just that…..well, how should i put it without people suing me…it’s just that we don’t like it when people who plays guns point it towards us or our children…so, if you decide to smoke near non-smokers, ask if they care or not first please.
I smoke, and i enjoy it. Im not addicted as i regularly go as much as a week without a smoke. Think back to the days when our ancestors would get together and share a pipe, or hand rolled cigar and have a drink with their friend or neighbour and tell tales etc, that is what smoking is to most people. Not these fuds that are on a 20-40 a day habit.
Yeah smokings bad, yeah smoking kills, but im from Scotland, it is now illegal to smoke in public places, even bus stops, generally places that require standing close to stranger. Good idea, seeing as smoking kills. But i will not stand ignorant people that look down on me as if i was filth. I smoke for PLEASURE!! And i will until the day may come that i have kids.
Oh and to the reader that said people do not choose to be obese? Post No. 4. How do they get that way then? Are they born obese? because if they are then one third of female genitals in Britain would be utterly destroyed! That is not the case, fatties are fat either from their own doing, or their parents being stupid enough to give their children whatever they want, when they want. You do not get obese by accident. Fair enough some people find it hard to lose but it is their, or their families own fault they are like that.
I smoke through my own choice. It eases my stress.
Yes I may catch cancer (I say may as there are hundred year old people who drink and smoke all their life and are ‘perfectly’ healthy) but that is my choice. I may be hit by a bus tomorrow but I’m not going to stop crossing roads. Do you nag at people who throw themselves out of planes? Do you nag at people who ‘free-climb’? No. Yet these people are intentionally endangering their lives in a far more direct way then smokers.
I smoke in designated areas or out in the open air. I don’t smoke inside where there are people who don’t want me to, I avoid blowing smoke at people. I avoid children like the plague when I am smoking to avoid them inhaling my smoke. Do alcoholics exercise the same consideration? Do obese people hide their fat when a kid walks by? I think not.
Get off you high horse and leave the smokers alone. It is a life choice for OUR lives. Don’t like it? Tough, we are human and have freedom of choice.
Smoking itself can’t really be said to be morally wrong, people can treat their own bodies like shit if they want. Smoking around others who don’t want it, you have an argument, and I’d say majority rules. If you’re a non-smoker around a bunch of smokers, you should leave if you don’t like it. If you’re a smoker around a bunch of non-smokers, put it out.
To the people who think it’s so easy to give up smoking, yes it’s possible but it’s pretty difficult because cigarettes are addicting and screw with the brain no matter how disciplined a person is. It’s almost like giving up masturbation. To the person above who can go up to a whole week (!), wow! Not. You’re addicted, sorry. A lot of smokers claim they aren’t addicted, but they are, it’s a biological fact.
The problem with demonizing smokers is that then smoking becomes something to do just to feel like a minority or feel oppressed in some insignificant way, and as an effect less people stop quitting. These ads are funny, but can’t really be said to be educational. I think every smoker knows its bad for them and for people around them. How about less money on anti-advertising and more money on supplying things to help people quit.
I’ve been smoking for many years. I don’t smoke around areas where there are people. Definitely not around children at any time. I don’t throw my butts out. I put them out and carry them to the trash. I don’t smoke indoors. Ever. But I get up in a pretty big knot when some preachy person I have never known begins to tell me what I should be doing or that because I am doing it, I am a horrible person or I am somehow affecting their quality of life.
I made the choice to smoke and I am responsible for that choice. I totally get that, but where I draw the line is where it becomes socially acceptable to publicly ridicule someone for a choice in THEIR life. The federal government in Canada where I live sponsored an anti-smoking campaign years ago called stupid.ca and I remember thinking to myself that this is how a democratic government elected into power treats their minority citizens? By attacking them directly and calling them stupid.
I see a lot of people on here saying I’m wrecking the environment as well. Fair enough. For all the chemicals that will be released by my smoking in my ENTIRE life. It is just a drop in the bucket compared to what modern industry is churning out. Especially pulp and paper, the plastics industry, pesticides and oh yeah… vehicles. Just one vehicle driven by anybody obliterates all of the smoking in my area in one fell swoop. I don’t drive because I see how environmentally unsafe it is.
I’ll tell you what though, how about all of you with your god complex do a little test with me? I will lock myself in my garage all night long and light up smoke after smoke. All of you with your SUV’s and giant trucks and any car really can sit in your garage with your car running all night and we’ll see who’s smoking what in the morning.
I love these ads.
To me, smoking is one of the most deplorable things a person can do to themselves, the enviroment, and others around them. Smoking has been around for hundreds of years, and despite all the statistics and facts, humans are just too stupid and greedy to realize we would ALL be so much better off without the nasty addiction. It’s all because of big buisness.
I’ve grown up in a family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even my own parents and almost all of them smoke. It’s so disgusting, I feel lucky that I have learned how bad it is. The only problem is I’ve been around second-hand all my life. And I’ve tried to get my parents to quit dozens of times, and what do they do? Nothing. It’s so selfish to smoke, especially when you have others who love you.
If you smoke you don’t get as great life insurance. Why? Because they know it’ll kill you. So why can’t everyone learn that even our personal lives would improve greatly? More insurance money, and more money in your pocket after saving $40+ on a carton every week or so.

Smoking they say is more addictive than heroin, why is that, they add chemicals to cigarettes to make them more addictive. So now you have one smoke and chances are you will smoke for years. Yet they want everyone to quit smoking. Now think about the taxes, cigarettes are taxed heavily, which means the more people smoke the more money the government gets, hence the chemicals to make cigarettes more addictive. Then there are the stop smoking aids, which cost more than buying cigarettes. If they really wanted people to stop smoking, cigarettes would be illegal, and they would stop making them, never going to happen. How about cigarettes being made from tobacco, and not adding in any chemicals. Bottom line is money, its always about the money.
I used to be a smoker, and I agree, it’s a terrible habit and extremely hard to quit. But seriously guys come on, stop ragging on smokers, it’s their choice to smoke and the taxes that the government makes on cigarette sales is insane. So next time you bad mouth a smoker, have a think, their smokes help pay for your roads, healthcare and countless other things. Although governments around the world campaign against smoking, they’d be royally ‘effed’ if everybody suddenly did quit.
f*ck you. You obviously have no idea what gaff smokers get. I’m overweight and I smoke occasionally, my diet is far more of a hazard to my health, even my doctor says so. However, people not only don’t say anything about my diet, they find ways to excuse why I’m overweight.
As for smoking I get railed about it all the time, even though I smoke maybe a pack a month. You don’t have any clue how much sh*t we get from b*tches like you. Even those of us who only smoke outside, away from any nonsmokers. I get called out for the way I smell, even when I do my best to change my shirt, wash my hands, chew a stick of gum. No one gets shit like us. You all can f*ck off, I smoke less cigs than most americans eat fastfood. I know its bad for me, and you know thats bad for you, why don’t you just mind your own damn fucking business. Assholes.
There are far worse evils in this world than smoking. We get it..it’s unhealthy..no shit…but as an addiction it does far less psychological damage than either severe drug abuse or alcoholism, hell even porn for that matter. Things like that tear families and lives apart, whereas smoking is psychologically at worst a crutch for stress. I’m really tired of people thinking I have some sort of mental defect because I enjoy cigarettes. I’m not stupid, I just like the way they relax me.
Hah, its funny how fast the smokers were to point at everyone but them selves. Smokers are pathetic people, giving into an addiction thinking they can quit it easily. And why do smokers smoke? Does it look cool? Are you really that pathetic you cant even get any friends without smoking?
And about that pollution thing; smoking is not required in any means but a lot of people needs cars to get from and to work.
Obesity is a whole other subject, most of the obese people have ben raised like that. Parents are such stupid fuckheads they cant even see they are feeding their kids poison. And when the children get older they try to stop, but do they ever succeed? Fuck no, they keep eating and blaming everyone else because they cant see that they are lazy fucktards.
To all of you slim cigar smokers and fat children i say solve your self out, i know its hard but you got to at least try right?
I can see both sides to this argument, and i do think that the ad campaigns are designed to scare people. As they always say prevention is better than cure. To a non-smoker those ads look very off putting. However to a smoker, i can imagine they would seem quite guilt provoking.
There may be no excuse for people that smoke, however the fact is, they do. Lets not get caught up on why they shouldn’t, they have already been let down, and they are doing it. The job is to use clever ads like these to put the next generation off doing the same.
I watched a very interesting programme the other day about the tobacco industry and the people who work in it. You can’t just cut or ban cigarettes, that means unemployment, poverty etc for other nations. This is a global issue and will take decades to deal with, the habit is not just the smokers, its the habit of advertising, economy tradition and culture. If we were all singing from the same page it would be wonderful, however free choice and a multi cultural planet speaks differently.
Smokers aren’t demons, but they sure are damn idiots. And I shouldn’t have to worry about inhaling deadly fumes when I’m just walking on the street, just because some idiot chooses to harm themselves.
wow. seriously, when did it become okay to completely bash strangers for their own personal choices? This is a really messed up forum… let each other be… deal with your own life, and your own choices. I wonder how you all feel you have the time or the right to say shit like this about other people. We are all just trying to get by.
How about this. I don’t care about your opinion. Just like you really don’t care about mine, but you want to have that feeling of superiority. I love cigs, but at the same time I hate them. Don’t plan on quitting. I will blow smoke in your face if you spew your hatred of smoking to my face. I’m not bitter, these ads aren’t guilt inducing. I actually like the ads, not for the content, but the creativeness. You will not get cancer from walking through a cloud of smoke outside. Maybe, just maybe if you were sitting in an unventilated bar for 5 hours everyday you would receive SOME effects, but not cancer. Give me a 100% truthful study that says receiving second hand smoke from being outside gives you cancer… Please, indulge me
Why should smokers have to avoid you why cant you walk across the street. just like i dont wanna get shot so i dont go into the hood. Thats just a part of life deal with it.
What’s lovely about this has NOTHING to do on the morality/health issues regarding smoking, but on the wonders of advertising. Imagine you’ve just threw out your last pack, say, about three hours ago. You’re ready to quit this filthy, money grubbing habit-which you are perfectly aware of-and get in your vehicle. There are signs with cigarettes, bus sides with the word “smoke”. Even if there’s a “don’t” before it. You won’t notice. You walk into your gym. There’s a huge cigarette just swirling away in the corner. Taunting you. Everywhere you go, subliminal and advert messages reminding you. Telling you. FUCK BIG TOBACCO! But wait… Big tobacco didn’t put a single of these things up. Hahaha, what a bitch.
If I were Big Tobacco, I’d love these companies/agencies/organizations like family.
My mom is a smoker, and I really wish she’d quit. She smokes indoors and it always smells like the house is burning down whenever anybody walks in the house, and it’s really embaressing. Also all of our walls are a yellow-white from it. My clothes all smell like smoke and I’ve gotten stopped by friends asking if I smoke (not that it’s their business, but that’s really annoying!) She always smokes near me and it makes my eyes water and makes me cough. Also when we are on a road trip she always has the window open to flick her cig and her ashes get on me and my sister as they fly back. Smoking might be fine for the smokers, but it’s annoying for people around them!

I was a smoker for over 30 years, I quit because I was getting short of breath. The addiction to smoking is more mental then physical.
You need a smoke when
On the phone
Driving
Talking to someone
Drinking
Reward, like after completing a job your proud of.
After a meal
The physical addiction part is over in about three days. I found myself reaching for a smoke 6 months after quitting mainly while driving or out drinking. I don’t know there are a lot of 70 and 80 year old’s around today and most of them smoked or were around people who did. I think hairspray is just as dangerous when inhaled. Now that I’m in my golden years I find myself asking why I wanted to get here, more things shut down, quit and stop working everyday that was not caused by smoking,so even you nonsmokers are not going to be happy with old age, It’s very much overrated.
Man, I love to see arguments like this. So I smoke, not as much as I used to but I smoke. Never drop my tab ends on the floor, never smoke in the house or around other people who don’t smoke. Also don’t drive, use my bicycle to get about so I’m actually a bit fitter than most non-smokers I know. I also grow my own veg and cook, properly. But I’mnot going to feel all victimised by people banging on about me being dimb or stupid, or whatever, because we all have our foibles and in the real world, I’m not petty enough to snub someone becuase they don’t smoke and none of my non-smoker friends are petty enough to snub me.
Besides which – bet all of you would bitch even harder if tobacco was made illegal so the government had to slap a load of tax on other things to make up from the short fall – cos let’s face it – we put a helluva lot of tax money behind our habit.
I like these ads. Smoking is awful.. I don’t understand the point of it at all. It makes people smell awful, they all have this weird stench that smells like old shoes.
Also, I developed asthma when I was a kid because my mom chain smoked. And now, my mom had a stroke at 52 caused from smoking her whole life, and is bed ridden and still fucking smoking.
So yeah, if you’re going to make me miserable from smoking and forcing me to breathe that shit (almost all my friends smoke, so I’m constantly exposed), then I will happily bitch about it to you every chance I get. It’s the same difference between bitching at someone that takes heroin.
The fact of the matter is that some people have an addiction to food, some people are addicted to nicotine, and some are addicted to heroine, etc. Chemical addictions, like nicotine chemically change the brain. There is no way to ever get rid of a chemical addiction. For the rest of your life you’re going to crave a cigarette. This is hard to understand for people who don’t have a similar addiction. On the other hand, there isn’t anything wrong with being against smoking. I used to be VERY antismoker until I developed an addiction myself and now I understand. You can quit and wake up 60 years later and still crave one. Its a terrible terrible habit and its hard to quit. I just wish people would “hate the sin, not the sinner.”
You’re ridiculous to compare smoking to cars and machinery. They are beyond functional and serve so many uses beyond what you can even fathom. Smoking serves no purpose except to fuel an addiction. You can’t begin to compare the two.
Sure it’s a personal choice but even if you personally go out of your way to make sure you don’t smoke in other people’s presence, how does any passerby know that? You might as well be part of the majority that smokes without regard for whoever is around them, and that is threatening people’s health. Don’t be offended when you willingly CHOSE to be a part of that group.
Iy my mother and grandfather who live with me didn’t smoke, I wouldn’t have grown up with a disgusting hacking cough an my sister’s allergies might have been a billion times better. I would be able to breath better.
As for the person who made the comment about the demonization of smokers:
“Smoking causes blindness? Since when?
I agree. The demonization of smokers is getting pretty old.
Obesity just surpassed smoking as the #1 cause of heart disease. When are we gonna start seeing ads that say “Hey fatty! You’re gross and are going to die!””
I’m overweight and not hurting anyone by it. Smoking is hurting others. But people that aren’t affected like I am shouldn’t be harassing smokers in public, for example. Stop being nosy yuppies.
Am I the only one who feels like the image of the children with bags over their heads is too much?
There’s a difference between trying to prove a point and going too far, and that one just crossed the line. I feel like the horrifying feeling you get from looking at it overblows any sort of ‘I should stop smoking’ reaction you should be getting.
Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way. I feel like anti-anything ads always tend to go too far, and start turning what are mostly normal people into the Enemy. Showing an image like that is like saying ‘look at those child killers’
If people weren’t dumb enough to smoke, talented creatives wouldn’t have to crank up the Shock factor so much, and could go and do something more useful.
Really. Why are you still smoking?
I still feel like they lose all the effect they were going for. Instead of feeling disgusted with themselves, they feel disgusted with the person who made it. It just loses the point when they get too extreme. And there is a point where you lose effectiveness.
Also, you might wanna be careful, you might fall off that high horse you’ve climbed onto.
a lot of these ads are very creative but I dont think any of them are going to persuade somebody to stop smoking…I know it didnt for me I thought a lot of them were funny and not scary whatsoever

Yeah, we know smoking’s dangerous. We know it’s unhealthy, it smells, it’s addictive. But smokers are fast becoming a pariah caste. All of a sudden it’s OK to harass and abuse smokers; it’s ok to call us names and such. That’s not ok.

Screw you, smokers.
February 20th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
Uhm…yeah.
February 20th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
I don’t see how these adds are demonizing smokers, other than those who smoke around their children. Their about educating the smokers. As someone who has lost a parent and a grandparent to cancers caused by smoking, we just want you to stop for your own good.

Smokers stink… Figuratively and literally.

Most of these ads are quite creative, but some seem to be more sensational and distracting than they are persuasive or effective. Overall, very interesting to look at.
To Phil;
To Halliday;
Smokers are not demons, and your logic in calling them demons is childish. By your logic;
To everyone;
stop the ad homonym attacks. Let’s be adults and just accept that some people are going to do things that you don’t agree with, and that is perfectly okay.
February 25th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
the “eating food is natural” argument gets thrown out the window when you examine the contents of the food we eat today. The chemicals and preservatives found in most processed and readily available food is about as natural as the chemicals found in cigarettes. Constant eating of McDonald’s (not saying all obese people do this, because that’s obviously not true.) has the same (or at least similar) long term health risks as smoking.
February 26th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
February 26th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
Oh and as for the obesity argument, there is a simple truth. Matter doesn’t come from nothing. If someone is fat, it took a conscious decision to put it there. It doesn’t magically appear. Fact. Go back a couple hundred years, and the only fat people were the wealthy, lazy, gluttonous people. No defense against this statement either.
February 26th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
Regardless of how annoying non-smokers and anti-smokers may be, the point remains: You are destroying your health. There’s no way around it. Everybody knows this. Why say that you’ll “quit when people quit nagging and whining”? If you’re so adamant about smoking, then you’re not going to quit when people shut up, so don’t even pretend. Let the anti-smoking campaigns continue so we can at least prevent other people from your fate.

March 9th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
Well, kindly shut the hell up, since my personal choices that do not impact others are just that: MY PERSONAL CHOICES.

its really hard to tell people who’s been enjoying and spending most of their years smoking not to smoke, because the smoke has cloud their mind.
i would say we do our best to help those who wants the help, and let those who despise our help go their way. there’s people who tried all ways to live longer even just a day, and there’s those who do not care if they die faster. so let them be. the world is healthier without them anyway.
obviously though, these ads are working since the smokers are offended and feel the need to defend themselves. by the way, why are smokers offended by these ads if they truly already know that these are the facts. too scared to be reminded i guess? i believe the ads are there so people who were not educated enough about these facts can think twice.
a good idea though, is for governments to create little smoking rooms in public, so these smokers who choose to destroy their bodies can destroy and kill each other.
ps: why compare humans to cars?
and how can u just ‘talk’ ur kid out of smoking if they see u smoke. esp if ur their rolemodel. we dont smoke and we cant even talk you out of it. clear ur head before u speak rubbish.

Buy an electric car, eliminate the use of gas in your home and never start a fire for pleasure or otherwise, and then we’ll talk about how much my smoking is harming the environment.

Fair enough some people find it hard to lose but it is their, or their families own fault they are like that.

ciggs are such a small thing, its ridiculous to make excuses to smoke them.

May 1st, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
May 1st, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
May 2nd, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)

Here is something to think about:
Just my 2 cents

There are far worse evils in this world than smoking. We get it..it’s unhealthy..no shit…but as an addiction it does far less psychological damage than either severe drug abuse or alcoholism, hell even porn for that matter. Things like that tear families and lives apart, whereas smoking is psychologically at worst a crutch for stress. I’m really tired of people thinking I have some sort of mental defect because I enjoy cigarettes. I’m not stupid, I just like the way they relax me.

All this talking about not smoking makes me want a cheeseburger washed down with a Red Bull.

There are some pretty strong opinion on here.
If we were all singing from the same page it would be wonderful, however free choice and a multi cultural planet speaks differently.

holy shit. i need a smoke!!! i hope all you fuckin nay sayers and anti smoking advocates out there get cancer in your balls.

Smokers aren’t demons, but they sure are damn idiots. And I shouldn’t have to worry about inhaling deadly fumes when I’m just walking on the street, just because some idiot chooses to harm themselves.

Great post! I generally don’t appreciate the whole anti-smoking thing, but these are very creative!
May 25th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
wow. seriously, when did it become okay to completely bash strangers for their own personal choices?

June 14th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)

June 15th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)

@Zil
June 20th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)

TL;DR Too extreme

If people weren’t dumb enough to smoke, talented creatives wouldn’t have to crank up the Shock factor so much, and could go and do something more useful.
Really. Why are you still smoking?
June 29th, 2010at %I:%M %p(#)
I still feel like they lose all the effect they were going for. Instead of feeling disgusted with themselves, they feel disgusted with the person who made it. It just loses the point when they get too extreme. And there is a point where you lose effectiveness.
Also, you might wanna be careful, you might fall off that high horse you’ve climbed onto.
(P.S. I’m not a smoker)

You, people who are addicted to fuming, you can speak out everything what you want irrespectively what actual harm those cigarettes do. I do not want to sniff your fuKCing smoke so out and kill yourselves somewhere far away.
